SACRED MOUNTAIN
A Mountain of Awakening
Founded more than 1,200 years ago by the Buddhist master Kukai, Koyasan is one of Japan’s most profound spiritual centers.
Surrounded by sacred forests and temples, it has long been a place where people come not to escape the world, but to encounter themselves more deeply.
Koyasan is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”
With 117 temples gathered across this sacred plateau, it is a place where nature, cosmos, and life itself are experienced as one.

OPTIONAL PROGRAM
In Japanese tradition, fragrance is not smelled — it is listened to.
Through the rare sacred wood kyara and the finest sandalwood, participants enter a subtle conversation between scent, body, and the deeper layers of awareness. As the fragrance moves through the body's meridians, the flow of qi, blood and water comes into alignment — and something quieter, older, and vaster begins to be felt.
This session is led by Eriyo Watanabe — Grand Master of Ren Shin Ryu School of Incense and Special Lecturer at the Japan Pharmaceutical University.
OPTIONAL PROGRAM
Sound Meditation
Through the resonant tones of crystal bowls—quartz instruments that evoke a sense of cosmic vibration—you are gently guided into a quiet field of awareness beyond thought.
This is not intended to produce a specific effect; rather, through the natural resonance of sound, perception deepens and settles into stillness.
Within this space, a subtle shift in awareness can emerge, allowing you to experience a more refined connection with the present moment—“here and now.”
ACCOMMODATION
Shukubo
Temple Stay Experience
Shukubo is a temple stay — a deeply traditional form of accommodation where guests eat temple cuisine, participate in morning prayers, and sleep within the sacred precincts of Koyasan.
We suggest a temple according to your request. Rates vary by accommodation.
At Koyasan, meals are a continuation of the experience itself. Shojin ryori — the sacred cuisine of Buddhist tradition, refined over more than 1,200 years — uses no animal products, no pungent vegetables, only the quiet gifts of the earth. To eat here is not simply to nourish the body. It is to practice presence.
